The Proven Entrepreneur

TPE 170 | Entrepreneurship

Overview: This blog breaks down a candid conversation between Don Williams and physicist turned entrepreneur Randy Lyman on The Proven Entrepreneur Show. Randy spent years chasing business growth through logic, strategy, and hard work, only to find those tools were not enough to create real fulfillment. The piece explores his journey from brick and mortar business owner to emotional intelligence coach, the boardroom truth his own leadership team once handed him, and how understanding emotions changed the way he leads, sells, and builds trust with the people around him. It is written for entrepreneurs, founders, CEOs, and business leaders searching for the missing piece between external success and internal peace.

Randy Lyman had everything a successful entrepreneur is supposed to want. Multiple eight-figure companies. A place on the Inc. 500. And still, something felt hollow underneath it all.

For most of his career, Randy relied on the same playbook every driven entrepreneur learns early. Work harder. Think smarter. Push through. That approach built real businesses and real wealth, and it also taught him to shut down the emotions that seemed to slow him down. It worked, until the day it stopped working.

A physicist by training, Randy started noticing something strange about leadership, emotional intelligence, and business growth that no spreadsheet could explain. He began connecting ideas from quantum physics to human behavior, and it changed how he understood influence, trust, and what actually moves people to act. What he uncovered reshaped not just his businesses, but his relationships with his leadership team, his clients, and himself.

Then came the moment that changed everything. Three members of his own leadership team walked into his office, closed the door, and told him something no founder wants to hear. That conversation became the turning point behind everything Randy now teaches about emotional mastery, leadership development, and sustainable entrepreneurial success. The full story, including how he rebuilt his approach to business and life from that moment forward, is available in the complete episode on The Proven Entrepreneur Show.

He Built Eight-Figure Businesses, Then Discovered Success Was Never the Real Goal

Today’s guest is Randy Lyman. Randy is a physicist turned entrepreneur who’s built next to multiple eight figure businesses, made the Inc. 500, not 5,000, and discovered that the real missing key to success wasn’t strategy, but was emotional mastery. Randy, welcome to the show.

Good to be here, Don.

Yeah, thrilled to have you. So before we get into the interview, tell us who you are, what you do, who you serve, all that business card stuff.

Okay, well, I used to be a conventional brick and mortar business person for most of my life. I sold my businesses about 11 years ago. But I guess the most interesting thing about me is although I’m educated as a physicist, as you said, and I’m an engineer with multiple patents, I met a woman 36 years ago who introduced me to the unseen spiritual emotional part of the human journey and it changed my life and it changed my focus.

And I found so much success in my life based on my interaction with the people I worked with and helping them be the best they can be. And my success is due to them and what we did together. so, although I understand strategy and I understand hard work and it’s an important part of the human experience, to me, the emotional component of the human experience is the most powerful.

My success is due to them and what we did together. Share on X

Yeah, I love that. And we may be brothers of different mothers, even though we’re just meeting today for the first time. So first question, you built multiple eight-figure companies using the typical stuff, logic systems, hard work, all that. What was the exact moment, if you can recall, that you realized that wasn’t enough?

and that emotions and emotional intelligence was the real growth lever.

Well, it happened along the way. And in 1989, I ordered a new Ford truck. I had to wait six or eight months for it to come in. And I was excited. First time I bought myself a brand new truck and the truck showed up and it was great for a day or two. And then it was just another truck. And I realized that the material things I was accumulating on my path just were not enough within themselves. And yeah, freedom is nice. And

being able to do whatever we want whenever we’d like to, those freedoms that money brings are nice, but they don’t bring long-term fulfillment. And that helped me start to look at the world differently.

The material things I was accumulating on my path just were not enough within themselves. Share on X

Yeah, awesome. So, you know, in the entrepreneurial world, mean, many high achievers have that money, have status, they win. But so many still feel something is missing.

Why do you believe entrepreneurs can win the game externally, yet some are quietly losing internally?

Many high achievers have that money, have status, they win, but so many still feel something is missing. Share on X

Well, for me, it came down to, I shut off my emotions so I could focus more with my mind and work harder with my body and the actions I took every day to move my business forward. And that served me for a period of time. But when we turn off the bad emotions or the distracting emotions, and we turn off the good emotions too, the joy, the enthusiasm, all those things that really make life worth living. So.

The goal is to have time to spend with the people we love and to support the people we love because we enjoy our time with them. Well, in order to do that, we turn off our emotions and then we find all that success and we go to say, okay, I’m going to spend this money or spend this time with these people. And then we find out we’re shut down, we’re turned off. We’re not allowing ourselves to have the full experience. So part of the success of younger

people, younger men especially, is turning off our emotions. We have to do that to survive junior high. We have to survive high school without being too vulnerable because the boys and young men around us will just verbally and sometimes physically beat the crap out of us because they want to be stronger and better than us. it’s part of the human evolution of becoming an adult is surviving. And as men, turn our emotions off. We find success in our early years of business.

through intelligence and hard work. But then when we become a little older and we want to become a leader from a deeper perspective, we have to open up Pandora’s box of emotions and deal with the old pain so that we can then find ways to connect and have compassion and motivate the people around us from a deeper perspective.

When we turn off the bad emotions, we turn off the good emotions too, the joy and the enthusiasm that make life worth living. Share on X

I love that. And I think many entrepreneurs and my client base are what I call scientists. They’re very high IQ. They’re very smart people. And so I have an engineering team that the CEO is a physicist. Okay. I a lot of work in healthcare, a lot of work in the legal field, very bright people. But, this is a general statement, so it’s not always true, but sometimes that very high IQ is a little low.

EQ, okay? It’s hard to be great at everything. And so when they’re a little low EQ, like from the book of Dawn, all influence, all leadership, all sales, all inspiring people to act in the way that you would like them to act and in their best interest act, all of that happens emotionally. Can’t be illogical, can’t be silly, but all of that happens at an emotional level. And so

merely elevating that emotional intelligence yields great results. It’s just, I have a client, Cornell undergrad, UT MBA, I he has a doctorate and he’s like, Don, you’re the no game gamer. Like, what does that mean? And he’s like, nobody knows why your stuff works. It just does. I’m like, well, it’s…

It’s more about being and less about doing. And you know, that’s where the real secret is. So, okay, I want to, I want to turn your physicist brain on for a second. So as, as a physicist, can you, how do you personally reconcile science with spirituality without losing credibility with analytical leaders, with those scientists?

out there as entrepreneurs, how do you reconcile that?

All influence, all leadership, all sales, all inspiring people to act happens emotionally. Share on X

I’m going to try and answer this as succinctly as I can. So first, as a scientist, I break things into categories. So everything in the universe fits into one of three categories, our thought and information, our physical body and the physical world around us, and our emotions.

our emotions are bigger than time and space. Our physical body is right now. Our emotions come through our physical body in the present moment. And our mind is never in the, thinking mind is never in the present moment. So if I want to deal with old emotional wounds, which are bigger than time and space and let that energy out of my beingness so that it’s not attracting, and here’s where some of the physics come in, through harmonic resonance.

I attract my reality to me. And I know I’m kind of jumping around here, but if you go back to 1927, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and the same year unrelated, but 1927, the double slit experiment where they shot energy particles at two slits and observed them coming through on a photographic target on the backside. And when it was in the dark, these photons and electrons acted as waves as they went through these two slits, they recombined on the backside of the wall.

It's more about being and less about doing, and that's where the real secret is. Share on X

And they opened up the lid on this experiment and somebody watched it with their human eyes and the simple observation changed the outcome of the experiment. the interpretation was matter is not matter until it’s observed or till it interacts with something where it’s called into action. So our reality that we deal with every day and quantum physicists are talking about this a lot today is created for us moment to moment.

It appears to be solid, but it’s only energy in a something like the matrix playing the part for us. So when I look at emotions and if I feel an emotion of embarrassment, I’m in the eighth grade, I’m sitting next to a girl I’ve got a crush on and somebody makes fun of me. I’m embarrassed. And maybe today that’s not a big deal. I’m an adult, but in the eighth grade, that’s a big deal. So I have a hundred units of embarrassment, emotional energy, and I feel 28.

You have those units and the other 80 I bury. Those 80 units of embarrassment, of shame, of betrayal, whatever I was feeling at that point in time, those are bigger than time and space. And the universe says, I see that within you. have a harmonic resonance with those old energies of embarrassment, anger, frustration, aloneness, whatever that might be. And the universe says, I’m going to remind you of this, not because I want to irritate you.

because I want you to feel it completely and release it. Now, I can’t measure any of that with scientific equipment, but I’ve had thousands of experiences and probably close to a thousand experiences with people I’ve coached who when they get to the underlying emotional pain, they feel the frustration, sometimes cry the tears. As a 64 year old successful man, I still am comfortable crying my tears and letting that emotion go because we’re human.

So we let that old energy go and then the universe is no longer obligated to remind us of our old emotional wounds. Now let’s jump ahead today and say, I’m going into a board meeting. Now I’m going to talk to those non-believers and say, okay, so you don’t believe in the law of attraction and harmonic resonance. You don’t believe in quantum physics, but if I walk into a board room and I’m tense at all for any reason, and I’m trying to hold down that tension, that

that anger, that frustration, whatever it might be, those people I’m interacting with, even at a boardroom level who are all in their heads at an instinctual level, they still feel that unrest within me. And if they are like most board members, they’re like wolves, they’re going to sense that and they’re going to try and tear me down. They’re going to, they’re going to feel that weakness, so to speak, or that possible weakness, and they’re going to tense up. They’re going to, they’re going to

Take, and increase their guard and they’re going to be ready for a fight. Now, if I walk into the same board meeting, and even if prior to the meeting, I just take down my pencil and paper and I write down my problem and I put it aside and I’m aware of it. I’m not fighting that energy. Now I’m calm. Now I am caring. Now I’m connecting with the people I’m interacting with from a place of calm and confidence. think those board members are going to try and attack me now? No, they’re going to sense.

that I’m there to work with them. And they’re going to sense that they can get what they want without fighting me. So whether we believe it at a quantum level from some place that people call as woo woo or some, some unknown thing you can’t quantify, or whether we look at just common human behavior and my calm or on my tents, it works. So when I can be clear about what I’m feeling, when I can own it, when I can work my way through it. Then when I show up, when I’m working with a

somebody on my leadership team, a team member on the factory floor, or whether I’m in the boardroom, people sense a difference about me and they respond to me differently. And I can find ways to achieve the best results in any situation by being emotionally clear.

When I can be clear about what I'm feeling and own it, people sense a difference about me and they respond to me differently. Share on X

Yeah,
I love that. it was a tough question and you did it as succinctly as possible. Thank you. Thank you very much. You know, I

It was pretty long. You’re welcome.

was in Bangkok, Thailand, maybe 10 or 12 years ago, and I’m listening to a talk that someone had told me I have to go listen to this talk. And I’m like, this is woo woo. I’m not interested. And the lady who gave the talk is currently at Oxford.

doing her doctoral program on the relationship between neuroscience and spirituality. But her talk was about human performance and emotions. And that humans perform at the very best when they express or experience gratitude and at the very worst when they express or experience shame and fear as a close second. so I had an epiphany and that’s not a disease.

in that talk and realized that even though I’d won at almost everything I’d ever done, I’d never been grateful for anything. And so, you know, we may hit the skull over here and I’m like, great job, Randy, except what about this thing over here where we’re not doing very good? I mean, I wouldn’t celebrate for even a full second before I focused on what wasn’t going great. And there’s always something not going great. And so I…

I literally began a daily intentional gratitude practice several years ago, wrote a book on it and the listeners know I’m on a mission to influence a million people to begin a daily intentional gratitude practice. And it’s a big statement, but it’s true because it will change your life and it’ll start showing benefits day one, at day, yeah.

Humans perform at their very best when they experience gratitude and at their very worst when they experience shame and fear. Share on X

If I can interrupt for a minute in my book, the
third element, I talk about it as really a cheat code. The moment we slow down, we find things to be grateful for and they’re real. And it doesn’t take very long to find something to be grateful for, even if it’s just a roof over my head and clean running water. Then we start to turn those thoughts into real feelings. And as soon as we’re in a place of feeling, especially of gratitude, that feeling resonates with the universe and it brings us more things to be grateful for.

For me again, it’s a cheat code. I agree with you 100%.

Yeah. I’ll send you a link for the book and you can just download a free copy. And you are my brother from another mother. So I know that you teach that emotional mastery changes personal peace, but also business outcomes because everything business comes forth from the person. Do you mind sharing a story where

Unresolved emotion was a hidden bottleneck in leadership or culture of profitability. Could be a client story, unnamed of course, but it was a case study.

1999, I’m 10 years into my spiritual path and I’ve learned a lot and I’m doing pretty well, but I had started over in business, I sold everything I had in 96 and I started over three years in 1999, new venture. I’m out of money. My new business is not profitable and I’m stressed. So three of my, uh, three of the people on my leadership team came into my office one afternoon and said, Brandy, we’d like to talk. Can we shut the door? And they did.

And they proceeded to tell me that I was the problem for the business and that I could do better. And I needed to look at myself in a nutshell. And they were right. So when I took a step back and I found ways to deal with my own emotional turmoil and to show up more clear and caring, then over time, I built my systems and my processes and my changes in my behavior from that moment.

And then I incorporated that into my business ongoing. And so it was not just a matter of me changing, also changed the way we all interacted within the business. And as a leader, I’m leading people. Why? Because I can’t do it all by myself. And in physics, power is the ability to accomplish work. And that work is accomplished through our team. And that team performs their best when those team members know that we are there supporting them. And when they feel that truly feel.

and know that we’re on their side, they show up and give their best. And then we all accomplish more. It builds great teams, builds great businesses, it changes industries. And so, yeah, it seems abstract, but when we can find ways to be there for the people we lead, and it’s both a privilege and a responsibility to be a leader. And when we take on that privilege and that responsibility from a place of service, and we find ways to really help the people we lead be the best that they can be,

then businesses are more successful. We have more profits, we can expand, we can touch more people and we can do more good in the

Three people on my leadership team told me I was the problem for the business, and they were right. Share on X Power is the ability to accomplish work, and that work is accomplished through our team. Share on X

Yeah. Love that. Thank you. Okay. We’re into the fourth turn. can see the checkered flag coming. And so if an entrepreneur listening today fully embraced what you call the third element, what would change first in their business and what would change forever in their life?

First of all, the people in their business would not believe them completely until they believed within themselves that they were changing and it was working and they were truly owning who they were at a deeper level. takes a while before you own that. And once we do the people around us really calm down and tune in and pay attention to us and respond better. And what happens is our business runs smoother. It’s easier to do our job as a leader. And then we also.

find that it’s easier to show up as a husband or as a partner or as a son or a father. And then our world really changes because our stress from work goes away and our presence with our family increases and life gets better.

I love that. so like I share with my clients, it’s less about doing. It’s more about being. If you want better, let’s work on you being better. And so you got to tap into that. Randy, if somebody wanted to reach out to you or the company, what’s the easiest way to do that?

The easiest way is through my website, randylyman.com, for any listeners, that’s L-Y-M-A-N, so randylyman.com. They can find links to my books and my workbooks, some free offerings and links to my social media. Instagram, for example, is a great place to follow me.

Awesome. Randy, it’s been a real pleasure. Thank you for coming on The Proven Entrepreneur Show.

You’re welcome, Don. Thank you for having me. I love your questions.

My pleasure. Folks, that’s today’s episode. We’ll see you next time on The Proven Entrepreneur Show.
